Telisare (est. Tellissaare)
Seasonality: Winter (late)
Tellissaare – An old and highly valued Estonian variety, discovered around 1920 at the Tellissaare farmstead in Viljandi County. It originated as a chance seedling and, due to its exceptional hardiness and long storage potential, became one of the key varieties in the Baltic region. It is considered one of those “iron” varieties that withstand even the harshest northern winters.
Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized, flat-round, often slightly asymmetrical. The skin is firm and smooth, greenish-yellow, later turning bright yellow. On the sunny side, a gentle brownish or pale red blush may appear. Small greyish dots are often visible on the surface.
Taste: The flesh is greenish-white, very dense, firm, and juicy. The flavor is sweet-and-tart, well balanced, with a distinctive pleasant spiciness. It is especially appreciated by those who prefer crisp, firm apples that remain solid even after long storage.
Tree characteristics: The variety shows exceptional resistance to cold and canker, and is fairly resistant to scab. It bears abundantly but tends toward biennial bearing, so pruning is recommended. The fruits are harvested in late September to early October and, under controlled storage conditions, can keep well until May or even June, remaining crisp.
