Talvenauding

Seasonality: Winter

Talvenauding – One of the most popular Estonian-bred varieties, developed in 1938 at the Polli Horticultural Research Station by crossing ‘Lobo’ and ‘Antonovka’. Translated from Estonian, the name means “winter joy.” It was bred to create a hardy apple tree suited to northern winters, producing dessert-quality fruit suitable for long storage. It has been grown in the Baltic region for many decades.

Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized to large, round-conical, sometimes slightly asymmetrical. The skin is firm and smooth, greenish-yellow, with most of the surface covered by a bright, dark red blush and a bluish waxy bloom.

Taste: The flesh is white, tender, juicy, and of medium density. The flavor is very pleasant, sweet-and-tart, with a light aroma. It offers a well-balanced combination of ‘Lobo’ dessert qualities and the freshness typical of ‘Antonovka’.

Tree characteristics: The variety is highly winter-hardy (one of the more cold-resistant winter varieties) and productive. Although moderately susceptible to scab, it is valued for its reliability in harsher climates. The fruits are harvested in late September and, under controlled storage conditions, keep well until February or March.
