Spartan
Seasonality: Winter
Spartan – a variety developed in 1926 in British Columbia, Canada, by crossing 'McIntosh' and 'Newtown Pippin'. It is one of the most successful members of the “McIntosh” group, valued worldwide for its hardiness and very attractive, dark-colored fruits. In Lithuania, it is popular in both commercial and hobby orchards.
Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized, regular, and round. The skin is firm, smooth, greenish-yellow, but almost entirely covered with a very dark, rich purple or even cherry-red blush, with a strong bluish waxy coating. The apples look exceptionally aesthetic, almost polished.
Flavor: The flesh is snow-white, sometimes with a pinkish hue under the skin. It is very juicy, crisp, and firmer than 'Lobo' or 'McIntosh'. The taste is sweet with a gentle tartness, featuring a pleasant, fresh aroma and a subtle wine-like aftertaste.
Tree characteristics: The variety is very winter-hardy but moderately susceptible to apple scab and powdery mildew. It produces very abundant yields, so thinning is recommended to maintain fruit size. Fruits ripen from late September to early October and store very well under controlled conditions until March or April.
