Meelis

Seasonality: Autumn (late)

Meelis – an Estonian selection developed at the Polio (Pollia) Horticultural Institute by crossing ‘Põltsamaa taliõun’ and ‘Lobo’. It is a relatively new but rapidly popularizing variety in the Baltic region, combining northern hardiness with excellent dessert qualities. As the name suggests (Est. meele – pleasant, bringing joy), it is an apple meant to be enjoyed.

Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized, round or slightly conical. The skin is smooth, greenish-yellow, almost entirely covered with a bright, diffused red, giving the fruit a very attractive “marketable” appearance.

Flavor: The flesh is light, tender, of medium density, and very juicy. The taste is sweet, with a subtly refreshing tartness and a pleasant aroma. Its qualities are similar to ‘Lobo’, but many consumers find it even sweeter.

Tree characteristics: The variety has excellent winter hardiness (adapted to the Estonian climate) and good resistance to major diseases, including apple scab. It bears abundantly and starts cropping early. Fruits ripen in September and, under controlled storage, can last until December or January.
