Auksis
Seasonality: Late autumn
Auksis – The most popular and widely recognized Lithuanian apple variety, developed in 1951 at the Lithuanian Horticultural and Gardening Institute (LSDI) by Professor I. Štaras, by crossing ‘McIntosh’ with ‘Gravelstein’. It has become a benchmark for Lithuanian apples and has won numerous international awards for its flavor. Valued for its remarkable balance of taste, yield, and resilience.
Appearance: Fruits are medium to large, slightly flattened, and very uniform. The skin is smooth, thin yet firm, greenish-yellow, with a sun-exposed side adorned with a beautiful, diffused red blush. The apples are visually appealing and aesthetic.
Taste: Flesh is yellowish, very soft, juicy, and aromatic. Flavor is excellent, dessert-like, harmoniously sweet-tart. This variety is popular with almost everyone, as it has no excessive acidity but is not bland.
Tree characteristics: Trees are medium-sized, forming a neat, round, moderately dense canopy. The variety is highly winter-hardy and moderately resistant to scab and powdery mildew. Produces abundant fruit and begins yielding early. Fruits ripen in early September, and under controlled storage conditions, they remain high-quality until January or February.
