Seasonality: Winter
Vytenis – A valuable Lithuanian apple variety developed at the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LSDI) by Professor I. Štaras through crossing ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Lietuvos pepinas’. It belongs to the same “distinguished family” as the winter variety ‘Noris’. ‘Vytenis’ was bred to create a dessert autumn apple with a flavor reminiscent of the best international varieties, while remaining well adapted to local growing conditions.
Appearance: Fruits are medium to large, round or slightly flattened, and very uniform. The skin is of medium thickness, smooth, yellowish-green, with most of the surface covered in a bright, attractive red blush with a bluish waxy bloom.
Taste: The flesh is white, very tender, juicy, and fine-grained. The flavor is excellent – dessert-quality, sweet-and-tart, with a strong, pleasant aroma typical of the “McIntosh” group. It is considered one of the tastiest autumn varieties, appreciated for its melting texture.
Tree characteristics: The variety has good winter hardiness and is reasonably resistant to diseases, although it may be susceptible to scab in wet summers. It bears abundantly and regularly. Fruits ripen in the first half of September and, under controlled storage conditions, can remain fresh until November or December.
