Seasonality: Late winter
Štaris – One of the most valuable Lithuanian late-winter apple varieties, developed at the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LSDI) by Professor I. Štaras (after whom the variety is named). It was bred by crossing ‘Lietuvos Pepinas’ and ‘Ontario’. This variety is especially valued for its long storage potential and excellent flavor, which develops best in the second half of winter.
Appearance: Fruits are large or medium-sized, flat-round, sometimes slightly ribbed. The skin is firm and smooth, greenish-yellow, with much of the surface covered by subtle, blended dark red stripes. The apples look solid and attractive.
Taste: The flesh is whitish or lightly yellowish, dense, juicy, and very crisp. The flavor is harmonious, sweet-and-tart, and dessert-quality, with a pleasant aroma. It is an excellent choice for those who prefer firmer, crunchier apples.
Tree characteristics: The variety has excellent winter hardiness (well suited to the Lithuanian climate) and is sufficiently resistant to scab and powdery mildew. It bears abundantly and regularly. The fruits ripen in late September to early October, and in controlled storage conditions they remain high-quality and flavorful for a very long time – until May or even June.
