Seasonality: Winter
Černenkos Pepinas – A variety developed in Russia by the renowned breeder S. Černenka, created by crossing ‘Šafraninis Pepinas’ with ‘Antaninis’. This variety was designed to combine the best traits of its parent apples: dessert-quality flavor, aromatic richness, and resilience in harsh conditions. It is one of the members of the “Pepin” family and has long been valued in central belt orchards for its reliability.
Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized, regularly round-conical in shape. The skin is firm and smooth, greenish-yellow at first, with most of the surface covered in an attractive dark red blush with faint streaks. The apples look aesthetically pleasing and marketable.
Taste: The flesh is yellowish-white, dense, juicy, and highly aromatic. The flavor is dessert-like, sweet-and-sour, with a subtle spiciness characteristic of all “Pepin” varieties. During storage, the taste matures further and becomes richer.
Tree characteristics: Trees are medium-sized, forming a broad, rounded crown. The variety shows good winter hardiness and moderate resistance to major fungal diseases, including apple scab. It bears fruit abundantly and starts producing relatively early. Fruits are harvested in late September and, under controlled storage conditions, keep well until February or March.
