Seasonality: Winter
Lofem – a variety developed in Canada (Ottawa) by crossing ‘Lobo’ and ‘Fameuse’. Like other ‘Lobo’ descendants, it has excellent flavor qualities and adapts well to northern climates. Although less widespread than ‘Lobo’, it is valued by growers for its productivity and slightly longer storage life.
Appearance: Fruits are medium to large, round-conical or slightly flattened. The skin is firm, smooth, greenish-yellow, with most of the surface covered by a bright dark-red, sometimes purplish blush, often with a characteristic waxy bloom.
Flavor: The flesh is snow-white, very tender, juicy, and fine-grained. The taste is pleasant, dessert-quality, sweet-tart, with a distinctive aroma typical of McIntosh group apples.
Tree characteristics: The variety has excellent winter hardiness and begins bearing early. Crops are abundant and fairly regular. Like many varieties in this group, it is susceptible to apple scab, requiring careful management during wet summers. Fruits, when harvested, store well under controlled conditions until February or March.
