Seasonality: Summer
Avietinis – An old and very popular summer apple variety, originating from Western Europe (likely the Netherlands or Germany) and distributed across Europe since the late 18th century. In Lithuania, it is one of the most beloved traditional orchard varieties, valued for its distinctive aroma and dessert qualities. It is often simply called “Avietinis” because the ripe fruit’s scent and flavor resemble raspberries.
Appearance: Fruits are medium to large, slightly irregular, ribbed, and conical. The skin is thin but firm, greenish-yellow, with most of the surface covered by an intense dark red or cherry blush with a bluish waxy coating. The apples look very decorative.
Taste: Flesh is white, sometimes with pinkish tones near the skin, soft, and very juicy. Flavor is sweet with a mild tartness and a pronounced raspberry aroma. This is a typical dessert apple, best enjoyed fresh straight from the tree.
Tree characteristics: The variety is fairly winter-hardy, moderately resistant to diseases, and valued for its low soil demands. Trees yield abundantly but can alternate years. Fruits ripen in early September, and under controlled conditions, they can stay fresh until late November or December.
