Seasonality: Summer (early)
Alyvinis – One of the oldest and best-known summer apple varieties in Europe, believed to originate from the Baltic region (most likely Latvia or Estonia). It is considered the first herald of summer in orchards and has been grown for several centuries. Although modern commercial production has largely moved away from this variety due to the fruit’s sensitivity, “Alyvinis” remains irreplaceable in home gardens because of its earliness and nostalgic flavor.
Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized, round-conical or egg-shaped, often featuring a characteristic longitudinal seam (rib). The skin is very thin and delicate, initially greenish-white, turning almost white or pale yellow with a waxy bloom when fully ripe.
Taste: The flesh is snow white, very tender, soft, and juicy. The flavor is refreshing, sweet-and-tart, with a pleasant aroma characteristic only of this variety. It is important to harvest the fruit on time, as overripe apples become mealy and lose their juiciness.
Tree characteristics: The variety is highly winter-hardy but susceptible to scab and fruit tree canker. It crops heavily but tends to bear biennially. The fruits ripen in late July to early August. It is one of the shortest-keeping varieties, although under controlled storage conditions its consumption period can be extended to 1–2 weeks.
