Skaistis
Seasonality: Autumn
Skaistis – one of the most successful modern Lithuanian apple varieties, developed at the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture and Vegetable Growing (LSDI) by crossing 'Katja' and 'Primula'. It is the first Lithuanian apple variety with polygenic resistance to apple scab (carries the Vf gene), making it highly popular in organic orchards and among hobby gardeners avoiding chemical protection.
Appearance: Fruits are medium to large, roundly conical, and very uniform. The skin is smooth, firm, greenish-yellow, but almost entirely covered with a bright, attractive red blush, from which the variety likely gets its name.
Flavor: The flesh is creamy white, medium-firm, very juicy, and aromatic. The taste is excellent, fresh, and sweet-tart. It is a dessert apple whose quality rivals the most popular Western varieties.
Tree characteristics: In addition to exceptional scab resistance, this variety is very winter-hardy and fairly resistant to powdery mildew. It produces abundant, regular yields. Fruits ripen in the second half of September and store very well under controlled conditions until February or March.
