Seasonality: Summer (early)
Poema – a Lithuanian summer apple variety developed by scientists at the Institute of Horticulture, Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LAMMC). The variety originates from a cross between ‘Red Free’ and ‘Sylvia’ and was introduced as one of the new Lithuanian summer apple varieties.
Appearance: Fruits are large, attractive and develop a good coloration. The skin is relatively thin.
Flavor: The flesh is crisp and juicy, with a pleasant sweet-tart flavor. The variety is considered suitable for fresh, dessert consumption.
Tree characteristics: Trees are medium-growing with medium-density crowns and are winter hardy. The variety is productive, with an average yield reported at around 35 t/ha. ‘Poema’ is resistant to apple scab and has a high level of resistance to other important fungal diseases; LAMMC research classifies it as resistant to scab and not susceptible to powdery mildew.
