Beržininkų ananasas

Seasonality: Autumn (late)

Beržininkų Ananasas – One of the most valuable and popular old Lithuanian apple varieties, originating from the Beržininkai estate (Vilnius region, near Lazdijai). It is believed to be a chance seedling noticed and spread by local gardeners at the end of the 19th century. This variety is rightly considered a Lithuanian classic, valued for its unique flavor and excellent adaptation to the local climate.

Appearance: Fruits are large to very large, irregularly round or conical, sometimes ribbed. The skin is firm and smooth, greenish-yellow, turning light yellow with a waxy bloom when fully ripe. The sun-exposed side may develop a faint pinkish hue, though the apple usually remains light-colored.

Taste: Flesh is pale yellow-white, airy in texture, very juicy, and aromatic. Flavor is distinctive – dessert-like, sweet with a hint of tartness, featuring a strong, specific pineapple-like aroma and taste. This aromatic profile makes it highly appreciated.

Tree characteristics: The variety is extremely hardy in winter and moderately resistant to scab. It yields abundantly, though sometimes irregularly (every other year). Fruits ripen in early September, and under controlled conditions, can stay fresh until late November or early December.
