Seasonality: Autumn (late)
Uelsi – A variety bred in 1860 in the USA (Minnesota) by Peter Gideon. It was the first variety successfully adapted to the extremely cold winters of the American Midwest, and the breeder named it in honor of his wife, Wealthy Hull. Thanks to its exceptional hardiness, the variety quickly spread across Europe, including Lithuania, where it became one of the foundational autumn varieties.
Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized, flat-round, and very uniform. The skin is thin and smooth, yellowish-green, with most of the surface covered in bright, flame-like red stripes and streaks that often merge into a solid blush.
Taste: The flesh is white, sometimes with pinkish streaks near the skin, very juicy, tender, and melting. The flavor is excellent – sweet-and-tart, with a strong, pleasant aroma and a subtle raspberry-like aftertaste.
Tree characteristics: Trees are of medium vigor, growing rapidly when young, with growth slowing later due to heavy cropping. The variety shows excellent winter hardiness and strong resistance to scab and powdery mildew. It bears very abundantly, so trees tend to alternate bear (crop every other year) if not properly pruned. The fruits ripen in early September and, under controlled storage conditions, can remain fresh until December or even January.
