- Grabšteinas (Gravenstein)
Seasonality: Autumn
Gravenstein – one of the oldest and most renowned apple varieties in Europe, believed to originate from Denmark or Northern Germany (known since the 17th century) and declared Denmark’s national apple. In Lithuania, it was long one of the main varieties in manor orchards and regarded as a benchmark for autumn apples. Although now less common in commercial orchards, it is highly valued by collectors for its unique aroma.
Appearance: Fruits are large to medium-sized, irregular in shape, often ribbed and slightly flattened. The skin is thin, with a waxy coating, light yellow in color, decorated with bright red stripes and speckles.
Flavor: The flesh is yellowish-white, very juicy, crisp, and aromatic. The flavor is distinctive—a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity with a strong, “wine-like” spiciness. Excellent not only for fresh consumption but also for making apple juice or purée.
Tree characteristics: The variety is triploid (requires other varieties as pollinizers). It has moderate resistance to frost and apple scab. Trees crop heavily but tend toward biennial bearing. Fruits ripen in September and keep for about 1–2 months.
