Seasonality: Autumn
Delikates – A highly valued Polish selection, developed in 1964 at the Skierniewice Horticultural Institute by crossing ‘James Grieve’ and ‘Cortland’. As the name suggests, this apple was bred for exceptional fruit quality and a “delicate” flavor. In Lithuania, it quickly became one of the most popular autumn varieties, competing even with the famous ‘Auksis’.
Appearance: Fruits are medium to large, round, slightly flattened, and very uniform in shape. The skin is thin, smooth, light yellow, with most of the surface covered by a bright, attractive red blush with visible light speckles. The apples are highly aesthetic and appealing.
Taste: The flesh is white, very tender, fine-grained, and exceptionally juicy. The flavor is excellent, dessert-like, harmoniously sweet-and-sour, with a subtle aroma. These apples practically melt in the mouth, making them particularly popular with children.
Tree characteristics: Trees are medium-sized, forming a broad, moderately dense crown. The variety shows medium winter hardiness (suitable for the local climate) and good resistance to powdery mildew, though it may be susceptible to scab in wet years. It bears fruit abundantly and regularly. Fruits ripen in early September and, under controlled storage, can remain fresh until late November or early December.
