Melrouz (Melrose)

Seasonality: Winter (late)

Melrose – a variety developed in 1944 in Ohio, USA, by crossing ‘Jonathan’ and ‘Delicious’ (old-style Red Delicious). It is officially recognized as the state apple of Ohio. While it is less globally popular than some commercial “giants,” apple connoisseurs value it as one of the best winter varieties for its exceptionally complex flavor.

Appearance: Fruits are large to very large, slightly flattened or irregularly round. The skin is rough, firm, greenish-yellow, almost entirely covered with a dark red, slightly “rusty” or russeted blush. The appearance may seem rustic, but it conceals excellent content.

Flavor: The flesh is creamy-colored, firm, juicy, and very crisp. The taste is well-balanced, sweet-tart and becomes even more aromatic with age, developing floral or wine-like notes.

Tree characteristics: The variety has moderate resistance to frost and apple scab, so in Lithuania it is best planted in a sunny, sheltered location. Trees are productive and regular bearers. Fruits have exceptional storage ability - under controlled conditions they remain high-quality until April or May, with their flavor reaching full expression after Christmas.
