Alva (pl.Alwa)

Seasonality: Winter

Alva – One of the most popular and valuable varieties bred in Poland (at the Skierniewice Research Institute of Pomology), developed from ‘McIntosh’ seedlings. It was created as a hardier and better-keeping alternative to apples from the “McIntosh” group. In Lithuania, this variety is highly valued both in commercial orchards and private gardens for its frost resistance and excellent fruit quality.

Appearance: Fruits are medium-sized to large, round and slightly flattened, very uniform in shape. The skin is smooth and firm, greenish-yellow, almost entirely covered with a rich dark red blush and a bluish waxy bloom. The apples look highly attractive and marketable.

Taste: The flesh is pale, firm, very juicy, and aromatic. The flavor is sweet-and-tart, well balanced, reminiscent of classic “McIntosh,” but with a crisper texture. It is an excellent dessert apple appreciated by most consumers.

Tree characteristics: Trees are vigorous, forming a strong, moderately dense canopy. The variety shows very high winter hardiness (one of the most frost-resistant winter varieties in our region) and moderate resistance to scab and powdery mildew. It begins bearing early, crops heavily and regularly. The fruits ripen in early October and, under controlled storage conditions, keep well until April or May.
