Antej

Seasonality: Winter (late)

Antej – A popular variety developed at the Belarusian Horticultural Institute by crossing ‘Beloruskoje malinovoje’ with a ‘Babushkino × Newton’ hybrid. Named after the giant Antaeus from Greek mythology to highlight the tree’s strength and abundant yield, it is one of the main late-season varieties in the region, valued for its excellent fruit storage and resilience to harsh winters.

Appearance: Fruits are large to very large, averaging around 200 g, roundly conical, slightly ribbed. The skin is firm, greenish-yellow, but most of the surface is covered with a rich dark red or burgundy blush and a pronounced waxy bloom giving the apple a bluish hue.

Taste: Flesh is greenish-white, medium-density, juicy, and crisp. The flavor is sweet-tart, well-balanced, with a pleasant aroma. This is an excellent dessert apple that maintains its texture over long storage without becoming mealy.

Tree characteristics: The variety is extremely winter-hardy and well resistant to scab. It bears fruit early, abundantly, and very regularly. Fruits picked in early October reach their peak flavor after December, and under controlled storage conditions, they remain high-quality and crisp until April or May.
